There is is this Ukrainian song called Two Colors. The two colors that are sang about are red and black. The song is about the mother who has embroided a shirt for her son, because, he is leaving the house and goes into the world to follow his own path. So his mother prepares this shirt for him, so he remembers his roots. There are two colors on this shirt - red and black.
Red stands for the love his mother put into this work and black represents a sorrow, that each mother feels when their children leave the nest.

I am not the greatest embroider, if one can say this. Even thou it was expected of every Ukrainian girl to be able to embroide a "towel" for the wedding day and the shirt for her future husband. I'm not that skilled, so I could only make a card using red and black. While making this card, I was singing this Ukrainian song and constantly was thinking about my grandmother. She is this mother in the song. She got married very young, at the age of 16. She married the boy that came to her door and asked her to go with him to the town of Lviv. Well, it took us good 1.5 hour to drive to her village, so I can only imagine how much walking and riding a carriage she had to do in those days, in 1939.
Soon my grandma will celebrate her angel's day, her name is Sofia. My grandma is really full of wisdom, for this is what Sofia stands for. She tells me that I am a better cook that she ever was, but for me grandma's cooking will always remain the BEST!!! In January my grandma will turn 90.
and a song itself
